On the E! cable network since it debuted in October 2007, Keeping Up With the Kardashians (or KUWTK, as it’s commonly called), is one of the longest-running reality TV shows ever. And there are reasons for that!
The show, now entering its 19th season, allows us to peek into the private lives of this highly entertaining family, absorb ourselves in the narrative, and feel like we’re part of their inner circle. It gives us an escape, even if only momentarily, from our everyday lives.
While KUWTK has its share of negative critics, a few publications, including The Huffington Post, The Atlantic, and The Week describe the show as a “guilty pleasure.” Harriet Ryan and Adam Tschorn of The Los Angeles Times describe the show as the “Hollywood version of the Brady Bunch—the harmless high jinks of a loving blended family against a backdrop of wealth and famous connections.” We get to eavesdrop on their lavish lifestyle, outrageous arguments, and never-ending drama.
But even beyond their popular reality show, there’s a seemingly unending fascination with the Kardashian’s private lives. We’ve got questions: Will Khloe and Tristan ever get back together ? What’s Kim and Kanye’s marriage like? What’s the latest on the Taylor Swift-Kanye West phone call leak? How’s motherhood going for Kim, Khloe, Kylie and Kourtney? Are Kylie and Travis back together for real? What’s new with Caitlyn Jenner? Will Kris’ boyfriend propose, and if he does, will she say yes? The list of questions goes on and on.
Nevertheless, I like to watch people who are successful. It inspires me to aim for that luxurious lifestyle, too. Maybe it does the same for you…
But getting back to their reality show, it’s a sure hit. So what are we waiting for? Grab some popcorn and the remote. Let’s keep up with the Kardashians.
